Information about Heraklion

The city of Heraklio is the capital of the island of Crete. Main offices are located here as well as a university, hospitals, sea port and the international airport.
Tourism has developed mainly around Malia and Hersonisos. These areas are well known around the world as the "party" holiday places.
There are two large mountains in this prefecture, The "Idi" mountains in the west and the "Diktion Andron" in the east. There are many historical places from which the "Knossos" is the most famous. The south coast is cover many caves from which the ones in Matala are the most well know because of its hippy population.
